The Minotaur brings one of the most powerful figures of classical mythology into the contemporary world of sport.

A muscular male figure with the head of a bull stands firmly against a deep black background, holding a basketball in his right hand. His imposing presence evokes the strength and primal power traditionally associated with the Minotaur, while the basketball introduces a distinctly contemporary language.

A draped garment covers the figure’s lower body, recalling the drapery of classical sculpture and reinforcing the connection with the ancient world. The contrast between the timeless human form and the modern sporting object creates a dialogue between mythology and contemporary culture, antiquity and the present.

Vibrant vertical stripes animate the dark background, while fine white stucco is applied selectively to the illuminated areas of the body. The textured surface gives the figure a sculptural quality, making it appear almost as though a classical statue is emerging from the darkness.

The work belongs to my “We ART the Champions” series, in which I reinterpret classical and mythological figures through the language of contemporary sport. Here, the Minotaur becomes a symbol of strength, instinct and physical power, transformed from a creature of myth into a modern sporting icon.
