Atlas

In Atlas, I reimagine the mighty Titan of Greek mythology, condemned by Zeus to carry the sky for eternity, as a contemporary emblem of athletic endurance. Here, Atlas lifts not the heavens, but a basketball: a modern “world” whose weight speaks to the invisible burden every athlete learns to bear.

This work reflects the discipline behind performance, the relentless training, the pressure of competition, the monotony and repetition, the fatigue that is both physical and mental, and the constant negotiation between passion and the temptation to stop. It is a tribute to consistency: to showing up when motivation fades, to sustaining focus over time, and to carrying expectations, one day, one session, one game at a time.

The painting is 80 × 80 cm (31.5 × 31.5 in). The background is executed in black acrylic and structured by vertical red and silver stripes, creating a stark, architectural rhythm. The figure and the basketball emerge through bold palette-knife applications of white stucco, forming the illuminated anatomy in sculptural relief, an explicit dialogue with classical statuary and the heroic body. A double final coat of matte varnish protects the surface against UV rays, preserving contrast and material integrity over time.
