The Lion
The Lion is a contemporary reinterpretation of the mythological and heroic figure through the language of sport.
A winged, lion-headed figure stands against a deep black ground, holding a tennis racket. The powerful presence of the mythical creature evokes strength, courage and nobility, while the racket introduces an unexpected contemporary element, transforming the ancient hero into a modern athlete.
Vibrant vertical stripes animate the dark background, creating a dynamic contrast with the figure. Fine white stucco, applied by hand, is used selectively to illuminate the areas caught by the light, giving the body a sculptural quality and allowing the figure to emerge from the darkness.
The work belongs to my “We ART the Champions” series, in which I reinterpret classical and mythological figures through the contemporary language of sport. Here, the hero is no longer defined by battle, but by movement, strength and the pursuit of excellence.
The Lion-Headed Champion explores the meeting point between myth and sport, sculpture and painting, antiquity and contemporary culture.
